Facebook Accused of Not Hiring Black Candidates

Facebook Accused of Not Hiring Black Candidates

Facebook

Recently there have been various reports against Facebook. The accusations consisted of qualified black candidates being passed over for a job for the platform.

After two women have been passed for the job this recent complaint is now the third one. All three women have complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Mostly about the anti-Black racism at the corporate Facebook office.

In an interview with The Intercept the unnamed black woman described her situation.

The interview took place back in 2020. The very qualified woman felt that her interview rushed even after patiently waiting for her turn after passing the initial screening. After her rushed interview she decided to file her complaint in December. Continuing to state that during her interview she saw no other person of color. The only other one being the receptionist.

Her allegations state various patterns of discrimination. From being told, “…we’re really looking for a culture fit” to have been discouraged to apply.

The Intercept describes the term culture fit as: “…defined as the quality of hiring someone you’d want to hang out with socially or grab a beer with, but often criticized as little more than a euphemistic stand-in for racial or gender-based discrimination and a way for companies to deflect accusations of hiring bias.”

The idea of a culture fit used as an excuse to not hire someone because they will not fit it. Even then the article shares the percentage of diverse groups. Working at Facebook and many minorities fall at less than 10%.

The Intercept goes on to state that Silicon Valley has an overwhelming amount of lack diversity. While Facebook is not the last accused it certainly is the biggest company.

A Facebook spoke person said, ““We believe it is essential to provide all employees with a respectful and safe working environment, we take any allegations of discrimination seriously and investigate every case.”

Facebook has had other complaints about culture fit and discrimination, many from past employees as well.
