It’s mind-boggling to think that the 2000s was 20 years ago! Take a trip down memory lane as we list 20 songs that turn 20-years-old this year.

1. “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child

“Say My Name” was featured on the girl group’s second album, The Writings on the Wall, released in 1999. Although the record was released that same year, the visuals were released in 2000, making the song a bigger hit.

The song also introduced Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. However, the song was written by Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Letoya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson. LaShawn Daniels and Fred Jerkins III both have writing credits, with Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins handling production.

2. “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy

“It Wasn’t Me” is Shaggy’s highest-charting single to date. It’s about a man who gets caught in a bed with another woman by his girlfriend and his friend advises him to vehemently deny all allegations.

The record was never intended to be a single. Hawaiian DJ Pablo Sato downloaded the Hot Shot collection from an unnamed piracy website and played the song on American radio because it stood out to him. The following day, it was the number one requested song and following its radio success, it was released as a single.

3. “Who Let The Dogs Out” by Baha Men

“Who Let the Dogs Out” is actually a cover of the 1998 Calypso song “Doggie” by Trinidadian artist, Anslem Douglas.

Producer Steve Greenberg had the Baha Men cover the song and it went on to be their first and only hit. It gained popularity after it was featured on the Rugrats in Paris: The Movie soundtrack and went on to feature on many other movie soundtracks moving forward.

“Who Let The Dogs Out” won Best Dance Recording at the 2001 Grammy Awards. The song was also the subject of a major lawsuit over copyright ownership.

4. “The Real Slim Shady” by Eminem

Eminem wrote and recorded the “The Real Slim Shady” 3 hours before his album was due.

The song sparked controversy when Eminem suggested Christina Aguilera performed oral sex on Carson Daly and Christina Aguilera

(Shit, Christina Aguilera, better switch me chairs/so I can sit next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst/and hear ’em argue over who she gave head to first.)

It won various awards, including MTV Video Music Awards for Best Video and Best Male Video, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

5. “Oops… I Did It Again!” by Britney Spears

The bridge for the song include’s a dialogue which ties to the 1997 film Titanic.

Leonardo DiCaprio was originally supposed to be the love interest in the “Oops I Did It Again” video but due to scheduling conflicts, it didn’t happen.

“Oops!… I Did It Again” was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2001 ceremony, but was defeated by “I Try” by Macy Gray.

6. “Ms. Jackson” by OutKast

The song was created as an apology from Andre 3000 to Erykah Badu and her mother after their relationship ended.

When asked about her Mother’s reaction to the song Badu had this to say “How did my mama feel? Baby, she bought herself a ‘Ms. Jackson’s license plate. She had the mug, she had the ink pen, she had the headband, everything. That’s who loved it.”

“Ms. Jackson” won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards.

7. “Country Grammar” – Nelly

Country Grammar, melody and chorus originated from a song popular with children during clapping games titled “Down Down Baby”.

Nelly made his debut with this song. The song made it to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart in 2000

8. “Shake Ya Ass” by Mystikal

“Shake Ya Ass” was produced by the Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) and has uncredited vocals from Pharrell.

The song has been heard in several films and other media.

Mystikal has stated that originally he was unsure about releasing the song as a single because it did not show his full potential, that changed however when he saw the success of the record.

9. “Southern Hospitality” – Ludacris

Southern Hospitality was produced by The Neptunes.

The video features appearances by Lil Jon, Too Short, and Jazze Pha. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached number 23.

10. “Ride With Me” – Nelly

The song was released as the third single from Nelly’s debut album, Country Grammar.

The “I like the way you brush your hair” lyrics are borrowed from the 1982 DeBarge song “I Like It,” where they sing: I like the way you comb your hair I like those stylish clothes you wear.

The music video earned Nelly the Best Rap Video award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2001.

The song has been used for various movies most notably in the credits of Scary Movie 2.

11. “Whoa” – Black Rob

Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek both declined the beat for Black Rob‘s “Whoa!”

The music video starred Diddy, who was known as Puffy at the time, as Black Rob’s costar. The song was the New York rapper’s biggest single.

12. “So Fresh, So Clean” by Outkast

This classic record samples Joe Simon’s “Before the Night Is Over”

Ludacris, Chilli of TLC, and Layzie Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are amongst some who make guest appearances in the song’s video.

A remix of the song featuring Sleepy Brown and Snoop Dogg was featured on the soundtrack of Snoop Dogg’s movie Bones.

13. “Bounce With Me” – Bow Wow

The song made Bow Wow the youngest rapper to have a chart-topping single in 2000.

The Jermaine Dupri produced single was heard in the classic film, Big Momma’s House. The song includes a sample from “Love Serenade (Part II)” by Barry White

14. “Try Again” – Aaliyah

The song was featured in the movie Romeo Must Die and her film co-star, Jet-Li, also plays a role in the music video.

The music video earned Aaliyah two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video from a Film.

This was the first track to climb the Hot 100 based on solely radio play, without any sales figures attached. “Try Again” was also her highest-charting single.

15. “Put it on Me” – Ja Rule

This song was released at a time when movie soundtracks were just different. “Put It On Me” was for Fast and Furious.

The record was actually inspired by Rule’s relationship with his wife “My wife is a rider… She’s been there through everything,”

The video for Put it on me was the first video ever to be retired on BET’s 106 & Park after over 60 days on the countdown.

In 2002 the song earned two BMI Awards under “Urban Music” and “Pop Music” as well an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Award.

16. “Ante Up” – M.O.P

The song is constructed around a sample from the Sam & Dave song “Soul Sister, Brown Sugar.”

“Ante Up” was heard in various films in the years after its release, ranging from The Last Castle, Brown Sugar, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, to You Got Served.

The song was unlawfully sampled by John Cena in the song “The Time Is Now.” M.O.P. was in the process of suing but later dropped legal proceedings.

17. “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” by D’Angelo

This song was written as a tribute to music superstar Prince specifically his early ballads.

The video introduced D’angelo to the world as a sex symbol as he is scantily clad in the video leaving many wondering if he is clothed or not.

At the 2001 Grammy Awards “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” won an award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

18. “Summer Rain” – Carl Thomas

The song was produced by the Late Heavy D.

Summer Rain included influence from Stevie Wonder’s “Summer Soft.” In 2020 Carl Thomas Re-recorded summer rain as a tribute to his debut album Emotional that dropped 20 years ago.

19. “Case of the Ex” – Mya

“Case of the Ex” was originally supposed to be a rap song.

A wardrobe malfunction left Mya bleeding on the set of the video , however, Mya Admits it all worked out after seeing the success of the video.
Mya stated, “So it was a very painful video regarding our skin and having to do take after take in hot weather. ‘But that was really it, I really enjoyed that video and the response and reaction still to this day.”

The song was the one that led Mya to mainstream success.

20. “Wifey” – N.E.X.T

The song features samples from “No Scrubs” by TLC as well as “You Know I Love You” by George Franklin Smallwood and Marshmellow Band.

“Wifey” climbed up to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000. The song remains a classic.
